Review of Yazoo City, Mississippi

Buying & Renting
Star Rating - 9/11/2008
We moved here to this town for a job. We fully expected to find a house to buy within the city limits or at least in the county. We were advised by over 200 people to NOT buy in the city. We are still trying to sell our house from the city where we just moved. We decided it was more smart of a decision to rent. It took us all of 2 months to find a house to rent within our budget. It's not an area of town where I can allow my child to play outside. Dangerous neighborhoods are not far away. Seriously consider if the commute to another town is worth it. It seems a high sacrifice to pay private school tuition and deal with the consequences of living here where people have a habit of not paying their bills. Most of the time, I am glad that we moved here; sometimes I am not.

We moved here for a job promotion and fell in love with the beauty of the country. Unfortunately, the many negatives of the city and the state outweigh the few positives. The city itself is not safe. Many I wouldn't drive through even in the daylight. Before we even arrived, and after, every one told us not to buy in the city, which we didn't and am so glad of that. The city schools are a failure and after repeated warnings from the state to improve, the state is taking over. The economy is near zil. Unemployment is extremely high as is the crime. The city leaders fight within themselves and with the county leaders. Nothing gets done. Roads are filled with pot holes and street signs are illegible. Businesses keep closing. Walmart is the only new business to open up in the eight years we've been here. Despite repeated optimism from those few who love it here, there is no real growth here. There are no amenities and not one good restaurant to eat in. The one local newspaper is a joke and is sent by mail by subscription twice a week. The large city newspaper never gets delivered to your house and has to be cancelled. The AT&T (only) internet in the country is slow, only 1/5 gbs and isn't reliable at all. In other areas they still only have dial up. We stay here because of the beauty and not wanting really to move again, but are disappointed by the lack and quality of health care. Most physicians and dentists graduated from the one star medical and dental schools of the University of Mississippi and their lack of education shows. The law school isn't even in the top 100. If you relocate to Yazoo City, move out to the country or try another town. Be aware of the long commute. If you have children and live in Yazoo City, you'll have to send them to private school, which isn't cheap and the two schools expect you as the family to help them raise funds. You don't want to send your children to the city schools. The county schools are better, but not by much. Housing is cheap, but utilities and groceries are not. Most people can't afford to live here. Overall, if we had to do it over again, we wouldn't have moved here and are considering relocating out in the not too distant future.
